Module 02 · Prompting AI · Hands-on lab

Prompt
Engineering Lab

Prompting is the core skill of using AI well. You'll get three goals. For each one, write a prompt, run it for real, and check it against a rubric. The rubric grades your prompt— not the model's reply — so it teaches you to build prompts that hold up regardless of which model answers.

Your goal

Write a system prompt so the assistant answers a veteran's benefits question in EXACTLY three bullet points, each ending with a cited source.

Tip — Pin down the role, the exact format, the count, and the citation requirement.

Rubric · your prompt

1/4
  • Assigns a role

  • Requires bullet points

    Ask explicitly for bullet points.

  • Specifies exactly three

State the exact count — three bullets.

  • Demands a citation per point

Require a cited source on each bullet.

Keep iterating — add the missing pieces above.

Why grade the prompt?

A good prompt is a specification: role, format, constraints, and what to refuse. We check those directly so you learn the craft — independent of whether today's model (or the mock) nails the answer. Tighten the prompt until every box is green, then run it to see the difference.
